For over two decades, the Summer Shakespeare Program has provided students from high schools across the Fox Valley the opportunity to learn about Shakespeare, his times, and theatre by preparing and presenting one of his plays for public performance. The program had its beginning in 1987 in Kenosha, Wisconsin before being transplanted to Appleton in 2000. The summer of 2026 will mark the 25th year of the program in the Fox Valley. Summer Shakespeare Theatre founder and director, Ron Parker, stated, “The history of Shakespeare in the Fox Valley is a long and storied one.  Over the past quarter-century, hundreds of high school students and thousands of audience members have enjoyed the power, potency, and poignancy of the Bard’s words. Being invited to partner with MTI as only one of three high school theatre programs in the country to  help create and stage a student edition pilot of the musical & Juliet, based on one of the Bard’s most popular plays,  is a great honor and an incredible way to commemorate the silver anniversary of the Summer Shakespeare program. It’s a  dream come true.  As Shakespeare himself said, ‘We are such stuff as dreams are made on.’”  

Created by the Emmy-winning writer from “Schitt’s Creek,” & Juliet is a hilarious new musical that flips the script on the greatest love story ever told by asking:  what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo? Audiences are whisked away on a fabulous journey as Juliet ditches her famous tragic ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love – her way.
Juliet’s new story bursts to life through a playlist of pop anthems as iconic as her name, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life,” “That’s The Way It Is,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” – all from the genius songwriter/producer behind more #1 hits than any other artist this century. & Juliet breaks free of the balcony scene by transforming the classic tragedy of “star-crossed lovers” into a rollicking romantic comedy with a message of female empowerment and the nature of true love that is still at its heart, pure Shakespeare.  This coming-of-age jukebox musical which features the music of Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin and a book by David West Read began in London’s West End, then moved over to Broadway in 2022 where it received 9 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. In addition to continuing to run on Broadway, a production is currently touring across North America and will perform at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center June 2-7.
